If you are having a Toy Story Birthday Party or one solely based around our favorite Space Ranger Buzz Lightyear, then I have a SWEET Treat that will have all your guests going crazy. These Buzz Lightyear Cupcakes are not only Perfect for the party, but they are not as hard as they look to make.

My friend Amanda is the genius behind this creation and she was happy to share how she made them with all of us. So a Thank You Shout Out is in order. I have to say these are the best looking Buzz Lightyear Cupcakes I have seen and the Helmet he has on puts it over the top.

Here is what you will need to create these Buzz Lightyear Cupcakes:

  • Cupcakes of Course – Amanda used Chocolate
  • Foil Cupcake Liners
  • Sugar Cookie Dough
  • White or Vanilla Frosting
  • Frosting Coloring Skin Tone
  • Decorators Icing Colors – Purple, Red, Brown and Green
  • Ziploc or Baggie
  • Star Tip for Icing
  • White M&M’s
  • Food Writer Pens in Blue, Black and Brown
  • Clear Ornament Domes for Space Helmet

Here is how Amanda Created them:

Amanda took the sugar cookie dough and hand cut out Buzz Lightyear Head Shapes.  His head is kinda like an odd shaped oval. Just remember when you bake the cookies they will expand so do them small or even do a practice run on a couple to get your amount correct. Then mix up some frosting to get a Skin Tone color. You can do this by adding Wilton’s Icing Color Gel Copper which will give you a Skin Tone  or you can use regular Food Coloring – 8 drops of yellow, 6 drops of red and 2 drops of green and play until you get a good color.  Then Amanda heated up the frosting to get it warm and then she poured it over the Buzz Lightyear Head cookies so that it would give a smooth finish when it dried.

While you wait for them to dry you can frost your Cupcakes. Amanda Frosted her Cupcakes Purple – you can do this by either coloring your Frosting Purple or using some pre colored Decorators icing like Cakemate or Wilton’s.  When your Buzz Lightyear Head Cookies are dry and ready to handle you can start creating Buzz’s face.  Take two white M&M’s and in the middle draw on a Blue Circle with your Food Writer Pen, then in the Middle of that make a Black Dot.  Take some of your frosting and use it as a glue to stick his eyes on the cookie.  Then take some of your Skintone Frosting and you can stick some in a Ziploc and make a tiny cut in the end so you can pipe on his Squiggle nose below his eyes. Then with the same method, but using some White Frosting pipe on his smile.  Mix up a tiny amount of Brown Frosting and do the same method again and add on some Eyebrows. With your Brown Food Marker Pen make that cute Swirl for his chin.

To add Buzz to the cupcake take some of the Purple Frosting and add a Blob to the middle and set Buzz’s head onto the cupcake.  Now take your Purple Frosting with a Star Tip and pipe on his Hair to the top of the Cookie.  Now take your Green Frosting and using a Star Tip Pipe the green all the way around the Cupcake. Then finish it off with a few dots of Red Frosting to look like some of Buzz’s Buttons on the front. Let that all set a bit.

Now it is time to add on Buzz’s Space Helmet. The Helmet is just a Clear Plastic Globe Ornament that is used for crafts that you can fill. You can find them here: Clear Dome Ornament. Then just stick this on top or your Cupcake and you have the SWEETEST Space Ranger ever.

Thanks Again Amanda for sharing these Awesome Buzz Light year Cupcakes with us !!!!

Awesome Cupcakes!! I’m so excited to copy these, and was about to order the clear ornaments but became stumped. What size did you use? i.e.; 70mm, 80mm, 100mm, which converts to 2.7″, 3″ or 4″. Please advise!! Thanks so much, Kris
